CancerThera researchers visit CinRad and Amazul to learn about technologies and establish partnerships in radiopharmaceutical production

One of the missions of CEPID CancerThera is the research and production of radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive medicines) used in Nuclear Medicine for the purpose of diagnosing and treating (theranostics) cancer patients. Learning about technologies and production methods from institutions that are references in the fields of Radiopharmacy, Radiochemistry, and Nuclear Engineering is a valuable step in scientific research.

With this goal in mind and to establish potential partnerships, on February 22, a delegation of researchers from CEPID CancerThera visited the Integrated Radiopharmaceutical Production Center (CinRad), which is part of the Radiology Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (InRad/HC-FMUSP), and Amazônia Azul Tecnologias de Defesa S.A. (Amazul), a company that supplies materials for the Navy Nuclear Program (PNM), the Brazilian Nuclear Program (PNB), and the Submarine Development Program (Prosub). The visits enabled the evaluation of important details to be considered in planning the physical installations of CancerThera’s future Radiochemistry area, especially regarding the sizing and layout of equipment.

The delegation included the following researchers from our team: Professors Drs. Carmen Silva Passos Lima, Carmino Antonio de Souza, Celso Dario Ramos, Gilberto Carlos Franchi Jr., and Luciana Malavolta Quaglio. At InRad, the hosts were radiopharmacist Ulisses Lacerda de Figueiredo Sá; Professor Dr. Carlos Alberto Buchpiguel, clinical director of CinRad and full professor at the Department of Radiology and Oncology at FMUSP; and Dr. Fabio Luiz Navarro Marques, a researcher in the same department. At Amazul, the researchers were welcomed by Newton de Almeida Costa Neto and Carlos Alberto Matias, respectively CEO and Technical Director of the institution.
