The University of Campinas (Unicamp) has officially appointed Dr. Elba Cristina Sá de Camargo Etchebehere to the position of Assistant Professor (MS-3.1 level) in the Department of Radiology and Oncology at the School of Medical Sciences (FCM). Her expertise in Nuclear Medicine — with an emphasis on PET/CT, SPECT/CT, radioisotope therapy, and nuclear orthopedics — will directly contribute to the department’s teaching, research, and outreach initiatives.
The decision, published in the Official Gazette of the State of São Paulo on February 18, 2025, is the result of a public selection process (Process No. 02-P-27815/2022), whose official call was announced on November 8, 2023. “I am deeply honored to formally join Unicamp, and I look forward to contributing to the growth of our university,” said Etchebehere, who is also a principal investigator and Knowledge Dissemination Coordinator at CEPID CancerThera.

A career dedicated to Nuclear Medicine and to the university
Elba Etchebehere graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo School of Medicine (1992), earned her PhD in Medical Sciences at Unicamp (2001), completed a postdoctoral fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas (USA) in 2014 — where she remained on faculty as an Assistant Professor until 2015 — and achieved her habilitation (Livre-Docência) at Unicamp in 2019. Currently, in addition to her clinical role at Unicamp, she serves as President of the Brazilian Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.
Her extensive expertise in Nuclear Medicine, especially in Oncology and therapeutic radioisotope applications, will further strengthen the scientific and clinical development of the Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Imaging at FCM/Unicamp. “I am extremely grateful to be able to give back to Unicamp everything I have learned over the years,” Etchebehere said.
Selection process
The selection process included examinations and evaluations held on August 14 and 15, 2024, at the FCM/Unicamp Congregation Room. The judging committee, composed of five senior professors and five alternates with recognized expertise, evaluated the candidate through multiple stages, including a written exam, evaluation of academic credentials, a specialized exam, random point selection for the teaching demonstration, and an oral defense. On the afternoon of August 15, 2024, the final grades (Etchebehere achieved an average score of 10) and the approval results were officially announced.
The nomination was then unanimously ratified by Unicamp’s Administrative Council on February 11, 2025. Finally, on February 17, 2025, the formal appointment was made official, completing all legal procedures and confirming her position as a permanent faculty member.
