2nd Julho Verde Symposium brings together specialists and students to discuss advances in tackling head and neck cancer, on July 19, in Campinas (SP)

The Auditorium of the Institute of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (IOU) at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) will host, on July 19, the 2nd Julho Verde Symposium – Head and Neck Cancer, a scientific event that is part of the global awareness campaign for this type of cancer.

With registrations now closed and more than 160 participants expected, the symposium is organized by the School of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp, through its Graduate Program in Oncology, in partnership with the IOU/Unicamp and the CancerThera (Center for Innovation in Cancer Theranostics), a Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP).

According to one of the event coordinators, oncologist Dr. Lígia Traldi Macedo, the main goal of this second edition is to broaden the multidisciplinary dialogue and update the scientific community on the latest clinical and therapeutic approaches.

“Compared to last year’s edition, the event brings important new elements, such as the inclusion of emerging topics — among them, theranostic therapies, new radiotherapy technologies, de-escalation strategies for HPV-related tumors, and laryngeal preservation protocols. In addition, the program has been expanded to include more clinical case discussions and greater audience interaction,” says Macedo, who is also a professor at FCM/Unicamp and associate researcher at CancerThera.

The event is also coordinated by Dr. Carlos Takahiro Chone and Dr. Carmen Silvia Passos Lima, both professors at FCM/Unicamp and affiliated researchers at the CancerThera CEPID.

Dialogue, training, and solidarity

The event’s schedule runs from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with thematic sessions featuring experts in Head and Neck Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Clinical Oncology, Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, Psychiatry, Nursing, Dentistry, Psychology, Speech Therapy, and Physical Therapy. Real clinical cases will also be presented with moderated discussion between seasoned professionals and students.

In addition to scientific updates, the symposium reinforces its commitment to academic training and social responsibility. “The symposium is organized in partnership with the Academic Leagues of Genetics and Otorhinolaryngology at FCM/Unicamp, strengthening the link between teaching, research, and healthcare from the earliest stages of education,” adds Macedo. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as residents, are actively involved in the organization and scientific activities, promoting a collaborative learning environment.

This year, the event also joins the Corrente do Bem FCM (FCM Chain of Good) solidarity campaign, promoted by the FCM/Unicamp’s Office of Public Relations and Press (ARPV/FCM). Attendees are invited to bring 1 kg of non-perishable food on the day of the symposium. Donations will be distributed to families in vulnerable situations in the Campinas region, reinforcing a mission of care that goes beyond academic walls.

About the Julho Verde Campaign

Julho Verde is a global campaign that brings together 55 medical societies of head and neck surgery from 51 countries, various government agencies, and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). In 2014, the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery (SBCCP) participated in the 5th Congress of the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncology Societies, during which July 27 was established as World Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Day.

Since then, the SBCCP has promoted the Julho Verde campaign in Brazil with support from WHO, UICC, and the Brazilian government, which officially adopted the campaign in its Ministry of Health calendar. In 2022, the National Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month was formally instituted by Law No. 14.328, passed on April 20, 2022.
