To tackle the significant public health impact posed by cancer, the search for new diagnostic and therapeutic agents is essential. The disease is currently one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with a 20% increase in incidence over the past decade, and projections indicate 25 million new cases by 2030.

Addressing this challenge, specialists from various fields—Nuclear Medicine, Oncology, Onco-Hematology, Oncologic Surgery, Pre-Clinical and Clinical Radiopharmacy, Radiochemistry, and Medical Physics—engaged in debates and experience exchanges during the joint edition of the 17th Edwaldo Camargo Symposium and the 1st CancerThera Congress. These events took place simultaneously on April 19 and 20 at the Royal Palm Tower Anhanguera hotel in Campinas (SP).

“This is the pilot, and we will probably want to do it better and on a larger scale next year,” says Prof. Dr. Carmino Antônio de Souza, hematologist and principal investigator of CEPID CancerThera. The researcher’s enthusiasm reflects the success of the 2024 edition: more than 305 participants attended, including 82 speakers from different states in Brazil and countries such as South Africa, Argentina, Chile, the United States, France, Uruguay, and Poland.

The program was designed with multidisciplinary sessions to foster interaction between different fields and specialties. The discussions were guided by the latest findings on the theranostic approach in female tumors, skin cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, brain tumors, lymphomas, and proton therapy. There were multidisciplinary debates on the diagnostic and therapeutic applications in tumors and their impact on global public health, as well as theranostic applications in Nuclear Medicine, Oncology, and Onco-Hematology.

The event was organized by teams from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), the Nuclear Medicine, Diagnosis, and Therapy Group (MND), and the Professor Edwaldo Camargo Institute for Teaching and Research in Nuclear Medicine (Iepec).

About Professor Edwaldo Camargo and CEPID CancerThera

The symposium is named in honor of Professor Edwaldo Eduardo Camargo, a physician and researcher who was a pioneer in Brazilian Nuclear Medicine, leaving a legacy of scientific innovation and educational promotion. His career was marked by significant discoveries, such as a radiometric method for detecting leprosy, advancements in renal scintigraphy, and contributions to Nuclear Cardiology. He was also one of the pioneers in conducting the first transmission of diagnostic images between different cities, positioning himself at the forefront of medicine in the country.

Camargo played a crucial role in training specialists and establishing international standards of excellence in his field, inspiring multiple generations, including many researchers who are now part of CEPID CancerThera. “Just as Professor Edwaldo Camargo illuminated the symposium for 17 years, and this being our first congress, I hope he will also illuminate our journey at CancerThera. May this be a moment when we can create a space for Oncology research at Unicamp and across the entire Metropolitan Region of Campinas to grow, organize itself, and strengthen the bonds among event participants,” emphasized Prof. Dr. José Barreto Carvalheira, oncologist and principal investigator of the research center. Carvalheira was a student of Camargo during his medical residency at Unicamp.

In addition to the Unicamp Hematology and Hemotherapy Center, other institutions associated with the operation of CEPID CancerThera include the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Santa Casa de São Paulo and the Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos at the University of São Paulo.
