On July 18, 2025, Dr. Celso Dario Ramos was approved in the public competition for Full Professor at the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Campinas (FCM/Unicamp), in the Department of Radiology and Oncology. The examining committee announced the result in a public session, consolidating his promotion to the highest position in the academic teaching career, after his trajectory at the institution since 1992 – initially as an assistant physician; later, as Assistant Professor (2004) and Associate Professor (2019).
A nuclear medicine physician, Principal Investigator and Deputy Director of CEPID CancerThera, Ramos has built a solid career in his specialty, developing extensive clinical, healthcare, and scientific work. His PhD, carried out at FCM/Unicamp, was supervised by Dr. Edwaldo Eduardo Camargo, the only nuclear medicine physician to have held a Full Professorship at the institution until Ramos’s appointment.
Over the years, he has stood out as a leader in studies on radiopharmaceuticals, PET/CT, and new oncological therapies, in addition to his institutional commitments, having already served as Head of the Nuclear Medicine Service at Unicamp’s Clinical Hospital and as coordinator of the Preclinical Imaging Laboratory at CEPID OCRC, where he led the implementation of a PET/SPECT/CT system for translational research in Oncology, Neurology, and Metabolism. He was also Scientific Director, President, and Director of Ethics and Professional Advocacy of the Brazilian Society of Nuclear Medicine.
Currently, he is responsible for clinical research at CancerThera, focusing on the development of radiopharmaceuticals for use in the Theranostic model – an approach in Nuclear Medicine that combines diagnosis and therapy within the same procedure. He is also the coordinator of the Residency Programs in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics at Unicamp.
Examining Committee members:
- Prof. Dr. Carlos Alberto Buchpiguel – Full Professor of Nuclear Medicine, School of Medicine, University of São Paulo (FMUSP);
- Prof. Dr. Carlos Sérgio Chiattone – Full Professor of Internal Medicine, School of Medical Sciences, Santa Casa de São Paulo;
- Prof. Dr. Cláudio Saddy Rodrigues Coy – Full Professor of Coloproctology, FCM/Unicamp;
- Prof. Dr. Maria Luiza Moretti – Full Professor of Infectious Diseases, FCM/Unicamp;
- Prof. Dr. Vanderson Geraldo Rocha – Full Professor of Hematology, FMUSP.

Perspectives and goals
Ramos highlights moments he considers transformative in his career: “My time in medical school itself. Then, choosing my specialty, Nuclear Medicine, which is almost like another profession. Without a doubt, I also highlight my move to Campinas, my marriage, and starting a family. Finally, the arrival of Professor Edwaldo Camargo at Unicamp and the collaborations with Professor Carmino de Souza, with whom I share leadership of CEPID CancerThera as deputy director”.
Now as Full Professor, beginning a new stage focused on innovation, academic integration, and expanding the role of Nuclear Medicine in teaching, research, and cancer care in Brazil, Ramos intends to continue and strengthen ongoing projects, with special emphasis on CancerThera. His plans include developing a Radiochemistry and Radiobiology infrastructure at Unicamp. A laboratory will be built in association with an Oncology Center, supported by Amazônia Azul Tecnologias de Defesa S.A. (Amazul) and the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), promoting innovations such as radioisotope production and the prospect of proton therapy for cancer treatment in the Campinas region.
He also emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary integration within Unicamp, bringing together multiple areas: “It is important to work towards expanding integration among the different fields at the university that deal with nuclear energy, such as Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Biology, etc. I believe that the nuclear field can serve as a meaningful common ground among them”.
