CancerThera empowers researchers in digital image processing and analysis

CEPID CancerThera – Center for Therapeutic Innovation in Cancer promoted, between September 15 and 18, 2026, the course “Introduction to digital image processing and analysis”, held in person at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) of the Unicamp, in Campinas (SP). The initiative, given by the teacher Dr. Carlos Augusto Cardoso Passos, from the Department of Physics of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), brought together 29 participants and reinforced the project’s commitment to the training of researchers and the dissemination of knowledge and technologies applicable to health research.

The course brought together 29 participants and reinforced CancerThera’s commitment to the training of researchers.

Over the course of three days, the participants had contact with concepts, methodologies and tools that were fundamental for the processing and analysis of digital images. The programming was structured in a progressive way, ranging from the fundamentals of acquisition and digitization of images to advanced techniques of data analysis and interpretation.

Among the contents covered were punctual, logical and algebraic operations, filters and local operations, in addition to advanced segmentation, morphological operations and machine learning applications. The course also included the installation and configuration of ImageJ, a tool used in different areas of scientific research for image processing and analysis.

In the final stage, the participants worked with attribute extraction, classification, pattern recognition and case study, integrating the knowledge presented throughout the training and exploring possibilities of application in research situations.

Technology and knowledge at the service of research

The digital analysis of images occupies an increasingly relevant space in contemporary science, allowing to transform visual information into data that can be processed, quantified and interpreted in a systematic way. In this context, the training promoted by CancerThera expands access to knowledge and tools that can strengthen the quality and analytical capacity of research developed by different professionals and research groups.

For the postdoctoral student and transfer manager in technology at CancerThera, Maria Carolina Santos Mendes, training initiatives like this contribute to bringing knowledge, technology and scientific application closer together. “They strengthen the training of researchers and broaden the domain of tools capable of transforming images into data relevant to research and the development of new health solutions.”

Training as a strategy for innovation

The realization of the course integrates a broader perspective of CancerThera of stimulating continuing education, interdisciplinarity and the incorporation of new technologies into the research environment.

With initiatives like this, CancerThera strengthens its role in the formation of human resources, in the dissemination of knowledge and in the construction of skills for innovation, contributing to a scientific ecosystem increasingly prepared to face the challenges of research and the development of new technologies in health.
